I’ve been working intermittently on a historic cemeteries photo project since 2010. Of particular interest to me are those developed in the Rural Cemetery style. The Rural Cemetery Movement began in the US with the 1831 opening of Mt Auburn in Cambridge Massachusetts. Inspired by the romantic ideals of the time, and the style of English landscape architecture, the early designers and architects sought to create public spaces that would attract visitors and provide them with a place for “taking long walks in the peaceful setting, thinking about the past and the future, and keeping a little bit of history alive for themselves.” These cemeteries are now important cultural landscapes in our cities, filled with history and also preserving some of their largest green spaces.
